Xavier Samuel was born on December 10th, 1983 in Hamilton, Victoria, Australia. Son of Clifford and Maree Samuel, he has an older sister called Bridget (born 1981) who is a stage manager and a younger brother called Benedict (born 1988) who is a writer, producer and actor. He grew up in Adelaide, South Australia, where he graduated from Rostrevor College in 2001.
Despite completing his senior secundary years at Rostrevor College, he undertook final year drama at Christian Brothers College under the tutelage of Amanda Portus. During the same year, he played the part of Tom Snout (the wall) in Rostrevor College’s production of William’s Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream as well as playing the part of Belbile in CBC’s production of Aphra Behn’s The Rover (The Banished Cavaliers).
In 2003, Xavier made his television debut on an Australian show called McLeod’s Daughters. In 2005, he attended Flinders University Drama Centre, where he studied under renowned acting teacher Professor Julie Holledge. He played Hamelet in the graduate production.
Many movie roles followed, including Angela’s Decision (2006), September (2007), Newcastle (2008), Dream Life (2008) and Drowning (2009).
In 2009, he was cast as Brent in the Australian horror/thriller movie The Loved Ones in the lead role oppositeRobin McLeavy. Although it received several award nominations, the film was a financial failure, only grossing a small budget worldwide.
In early 2010, Xavier was cast as Riley Biers in The Twilight Saga: Eclipse where he beat out the likes of Tom Felton and Channing Tatum for the role. The film gave Samuel his first blockbuster film worldwide. Xavier received his first award nomination and win at the 2011 MTV Movie Awards. At the same year Xavier appeared in Road Train and started dating a German-Iranian Model miss Europe Shermine Shahrivar.
In the began of 2011 Xavier and Shermine break up, he also began filming the comedy A Few Best Men in Australia along Olivia Newton-John and Rebel Wilson. He also appeared in pseudo-historical drama Anonymous, nominated for an Academy Award for Best Costume Design.
In 2012 Xavier played the lead role in “Bait”. Despite only earning approximately $775,000 in its home country of Australia, Bait 3D was a sizable success overseas, making over $20 million China alone. It also made $2 Million in Italy. As a result of its international success, Arclight Films announced that the film will receive a sequel. In the same year he shoot Sanctuary (written and directed by his brother), Adore and Plush where he met his actual girlfriend, Emily Browning.
Xavier currently projects includes Drift released in 2013, the polemic Adore, hit at the 2013 Sundance. The film is based on a novella by british writer Doris Lessing called “The Grandmothers”‘ and tells a story about a pair of childhood friends/neighbors who fall for each other’s sons. And lately Healing, shoot on february, in Melbourne, Australia.
